In the December version of eSlate, we announced that Pinchapoo is a charity partner of the Snow Star Credit Union Community Fund. Since then, we were fortunate enough for some of our Business Development team to visit Pinchapoo to help package basic personal hygiene packs for emergency departments across Victoria.
It is pleasing to know that these basic personal hygiene packs will aid in the rehabilitation of those in need, both mentally and physically, whilst also giving healthcare workers a chance to positively engage and provide support in all areas of their lives.
The day was filled with humbling stories of people in desperation and despair (including meeting with and hearing from a social worker from a prison), but it was also incredibly rewarding to know we were able to give back in a small way. We’re looking forward to similar opportunities throughout 2021.
Pictured below is some of our team working alongside Pinchapoo staff.

Charity Partner | Pinchapoo
We’re proud to announce that Pinchapoo is a charity partner of the Snow Star Credit Union Community Fund.
The partnership between Pinchapoo (short for pinch-a-shampoo) and the Snow Star Credit Union Community Fund means that more Australian families will be provided with essential personal hygiene products in times of real need.
Pinchapoo (Pinch) created a hotel toiletry ‘pinching’ movement in 2009. They have since redistributed more than seven million personal hygiene products included in the cost of hotel accommodation to hundreds of thousands of disadvantaged men, women and children nationally each year.
As part of this program, the Snow Star Credit Union Community Fund will support the provision of approximately 8,500 basic personal hygiene packs. The packs are created by a 100% volunteer work force and sent to over 600 organisations, community groups and government institutions nationally.
“Currently 1.8 million Victorians access public hospital emergency departments (unplanned) each year according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report of 2018-2019. This support will allow an average of 400 packs per emergency department for the year to Victorian Metro hospitals.” – Kate Austin, CEO & Founder, Pinchapoo.
These packs are used to support a broad cross section of our community including the homeless, victims of sexual and domestic abuse, hospital patients, refugees, indigenous communities, outreach programs, disadvantaged families via schools, jails, natural disaster relief centres, foster children, mobile shower units, drop in shower facilities and many more.
As a bank that exists for those in the community who support others; we found the story behind Pinch to be incredibly inspiring. This partnership will also allow other Snow Star Credit Union fundraising activities to be donated to Pinch, including staff volunteering initiatives.
We would also like to thank one of our valued partners, American Express, for their ongoing support of the Snow Star Credit Union Community Fund and particularly for their enthusiasm in supporting the Pinch initiative.

Australian Education Union Women’s Conference
We were proud to attend the 2020 Australian Education Union (AEU) Women’s Conference in late August. The AEU leads the way in advances for women in the workplace, with a strong and long-standing commitment to representation and advocacy.
Over 200 participants attended the online conference which included keynote speakers Gabrielle Williams and Debbie Kilroy.
Gabrielle Williams is the Minister for Prevention of Family Violence, Minister for Women & Minister for Aboriginal Affairs in the Victorian Government.
Debbie Kilroy is one of Australia’s leading advocates for protecting the human rights of women and children through decarceration - the process of moving away from using prisons and other systems of social control in response to crime and social issues.
Gabrielle and Debbie were both not only captivating but insightful, educational and relevant to the present economic and social environment. We feel privileged to not only have attended the event, but for our ongoing relationship with the AEU.
Take 5 - Help Babies Thrive
We were proud to raise funds for Mercy Health’s ‘Take 5 - Help Babies Thrive’ initiative in September. With the five kilometre radius restriction in Melbourne, our Workplace Banking team walked, ran or rode five kilometres per day for five days in one week, to help raise vital funds to support Mercy Perinatal.
It was our way to help bring healthy babies home to their families. Based at Mercy Hospital for Women, Mercy Perinatal provides clinical care, education and research. Their critical work is focused on four areas:
- Clinical care of high risk pregnancies: mothers with medical complications or where babies have a serious problem with growth or development.
- Education to ensure the best knowledge is in the hands of maternity care providers everywhere.
- Toolkits for clinicians and resources for patients provided through their website.
- Cutting edge research with a global reach, to reduce the risk of stillbirth, preterm birth and preeclampsia.

Sleep Awareness Week begins on Monday 3 August 2020.
Getting enough sleep is essential at any age, with research confirming that there are direct benefits to improved mental and physical health. From late night report writing to attempting to sleep during the day while on night shift, it can be difficult to get enough sleep. It’s especially important this year as we battle the ongoing effects of COVID-19.
Sleep Awareness Week is a time to reflect on how you can make small changes in your own life to get enough sleep and enjoy the benefits of optimal learning and memory function.
For more information about the week, visit Sleep Awareness Week.

Following on from our Teaching Initiatives Program grants this year, we were delighted to receive an update about the exciting new initiative from Cameron Peverett, Principal of Colac Specialist School and Chair of the Principal’s Association of Specialist Schools Victoria.
One of the worthy grant recipients for 2020, for their ‘Enterprise Education Teams’ project, Colac Specialist School have now purchased uniforms for the four teams in the project - The Crafty Crew, Café Party, Oz Cooks, and The Green Thumbs.
It was great to hear that students have been trying on the uniforms, which helped instill a huge amount of pride and real-life learning skills. We’re looking forward to hearing another update in August, when Cameron attends one of our team meetings.
It’s fantastic to receive such positive feedback and to see how our involvement with schools through these grants is greatly valued by everyone involved, particularly the students.

The aim of the month is to create awareness around PTSD and support the experiences of family, friends and colleagues around you who may be suffering, which seems ever so important due to the current uncertain times that many people are facing around the world.

Our message of thanks
We were given the opportunity to thank and support the incredible staff who have made a significant contribution at Mercy Health Aged Care facilities. In partnership with the Mercy Health Foundation, Snow Star Credit Union and the Fruit Box, we’re in the process of delivering up to 120 Thank You packs which include fresh fruit, vegetables, milk, eggs and juice.
These packs are given to staff at Mercy Health who have shown great leadership and hard work in these uncertain times, to home care residents in times of hardship. They also benefit other families through support of the One Box foundation who provide the very same care packs to families at schools across Australia in desperate situations.
Snow Star Credit Union staff who were in the office at the time, were given the chance to include their own personal message in the Thank You packs, which provided an empowering experience for both our staff and the deserving recipients. Pictured below is Adrian, Snow Star Credit Union Business Development Manager (left), delivering Thank You packs to staff at Mercy Hospital for Women.

Swinburne University Orientation
Earlier this year, we had a great time at the Swinburne University Orientation and Welcome Back week. The event is organised by Swinburne Student Life (SSL), which is the hub of all student activities across Swinburne’s Hawthorn, Croydon and Wantirna campuses. We had a very enjoyable five days throughout the Orientation Week, as we interacted with many different students and staff.
Some students prefer to visit our display for a quick chat, while others come to ‘spin the wheel’ to see which of our ‘on the spot’ prizes they can win. As it is every year, it was a very enjoyable week topped off by a visit from SSL mascot ‘Razor’, who is pictured below with Doretta, our Relationship Officer.

O-Week events
The start of March marks the halfway point of O-Week events for 2020. We’ve had a great time interacting with students so far, with our ‘Spin the wheel’ competition being a fan favourite.
O-Week gives us a chance to interact with our future generations and make them aware of the support services we can provide to help them manage their finances, so they can live for now and bank for later. It’s humbling to find that many students are just as interested in Snow Star Credit Union’s origins, products and services as we are in their chosen field of study.
Refer to the notices section below for an updated list of our whereabouts during O-Week.
School professional development days
We commence each term by supporting several school Professional Development Days, and this was no different in term one this year. A highlight was the Glenallen School in Glen Waverley, which one of our Relationship Officers, Brian, attended in late January.
Glenallen School caters for students with physical disabilities, severe health impairments while providing learning programs for students with a broad range of intellectual abilities. As an organisation that exists to support those who put others first, we were proud to visit Glenallen School and look forward to doing so again in the future.
We receive fantastic support from schools, so it’s a small way that we can give back through providing a morning tea for staff.

State Schools’ Relief
State Schools’ Relief (SSR), is a not for profit organisation that supports the needs of underprivileged Victorian government school students by providing new school uniforms, shoes and educational resources.
Recent weather conditions including drought and bushfires have understandably stretched their resources to capacity. We were delighted to have the opportunity to visit SSR and lend a helping hand in a small way. In the warehouse, there were boxes of stock that needed to be opened, sorted and shelved for allocation. We, along with SSR staff, sorted and folded school pullovers, shirts and polo’s into sizes, as well as put shirts in plastic covers and re-stocked shoes all ready for distribution for the new term.
It was a privilege to visit and assist a like-minded organisation that strives to make a positive impact on families in their time of need.O-Week events
We’re looking forward to attending various O-Week events at TAFEs and Universities throughout Victoria in February and March. Our event stands are ready to go, where there will be loads of information about the Bank including how we support students and how we can provide you with a better banking experience from our products and services, to our dedicated customer service staff.
‘On the spot’ prizes are on offer during O-Week, so be sure to come and find us. We’ll share photos and stories from O-Week events in the upcoming editions of eSlate.
We’ll also continue to provide our workplace banking services throughout 2020, where we can assist with everyday banking needs, conduct general financial health checks and organise consultations.

In December, we had the opportunity to lend a helping hand to two of the many schools that are always focused on putting others first. As our way of giving back, some of our Relationship Officers along with some of our Management team and Directors ventured to Naranga School in Frankston and Rosamond School in Braybrook. Staff who attended were involved in:
- Hands on help in the classroom within the specialist education setting.
- Morning tea with staff.
- Assistance with cooking a barbeque lunch for the entire school community (staff and students).
The day was not just about us giving back in a small way; it provided a unique insight into the work that many of our customers do in the education and healthcare vocations. We’re looking forward to similar opportunities throughout 2020.

Catholic Health Australia (CHA) Health Matters Symposium
The CHA Health Matters Symposium brings together nurses and midwives, who are the lifeblood of our hospitals and aged care services, spanning the length of the nation. Being present at the two-day event gave us the unique opportunity to connect with healthcare professionals, learn about new initiatives in health, develop and build upon core leadership skills, and celebrate the valuable contributions made by Catholic sector nurses and midwives around Australia.
It’s a privilege to engage with such passionate and dedicated professionals who have made a massive impact on countless lives and communities.
Leading Aged Services Australia (LASA) 2019 National Congress
We had the opportunity to spend three days at the largest aged services event in the southern hemisphere, which took place in Adelaide in late October. The event is a place where leading edge thinkers and providers meet to challenge their assumptions and open their horizons to new ideas and approaches, in an era driven by factors such as changing community expectations, a dynamic political environment and the Royal Commission.
The world-class, three-day program of learning was MC’d by Kerry O’Brien and featured keynote speakers including Todd Sampson and Julie Bishop. The event provided global perspectives and interactive, thought-provoking discussions that are designed to empower the healthcare industry to embrace future opportunities and change for the better.
Customer Owned Banking Convention 2019
We were fortunate enough to be at the customer owned banking industry’s premier annual convention, held on the Gold Coast from 10-12 November 2019. The theme this year was ‘Stronger Together’, which epitomises the strength of the customer owned banking sector, which is to work with each other and industry partners.
The event is attended by stakeholders and suppliers within the customer owned banking industry, which provides a great opportunity to network with both leaders in mutuals and those supporting the industry. Leading speakers included David Murray, Diane Smith-Gander, former Australian of the Year Lt General David Morrison and Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) Chairman Wayne Byres.

#ThankYourTeacher
We were proud to attend the Monash University Education #ThankYourTeacher campaign launch on Thursday 24 October 2019, the day before World Teachers’ Day is celebrated in Australia, it was an honour to be formally recognised for our support of the teaching community that forms so much of our own story.
Sometimes we forget that teachers have a massive impact on our lives and communities. The campaign is a fantastic way to celebrate and acknowledge the work of teachers, as well as an opportunity to reflect on your own experiences and maybe even #ThankYourTeacher.
You can read more about the #ThankYourTeacher campaign here.
2019 Aged & Community Services Australia (ACSA) National Summit
For three days in October, we attended the 2019 Aged & Community Services Australia National Summit, held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC).
The 2019 theme was PURPOSE | PEOPLE | PERFORMANCE, which involved exploring the following topics.
Purpose: Due to the pace of industry reforms and the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety being underway for over one year, it’s timely to reflect on core values of Aged & Community Services in Australia.
People: The placement of people at the heart of services and a person-centred approach to the aged care workforce.
Performance: Leadership, governance and management, which is the key to delivering sustainable, quality services.
Further considerations and takeaways from the Summit included the need to redefine the experience of ageing in the community, questioning everything from delivery of services and care, to community integration and innovative technology opportunities.
These types of events prove to be invaluable for us, as we strive towards continually assisting the healthcare community with sponsorships, donations and financial literacy support.

Health Metrics World Conference
We were at the Health Metrics World Conference from 29-30 August, which focused on the current climate of increasing scrutiny on the Health and Social Care industries, where it is crucial to think about efficiency and compliance.
The conference was held at the Crown Conference Centre in Melbourne and it allowed us to hear from more than 30 guest speakers discuss their experiences in areas such as technology, innovation, leadership and reporting. It was also discussed that connection, integration, consolidation and alignment is the next step in the evolution of process automation and the delivery of high-quality care in the healthcare industry.
Australian College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP) National Conference
We attended the ACNP National Conference from 2-5 September, at Albert Park in Melbourne. The conference brings together Nurse Practitioners, Advanced Practice Nurses and Health Professionals from around the world.
The ACNP National Conference was a fantastic opportunity for us to further demonstrate our support for the people who care for others, and to gain insights from healthcare leaders about the 2019 themes of:
- Rural & Remote Health
- Primary Health Care
- Private Practice, and
- Speciality Practice, including Mental Health and Emergency.
Victorian Teachers’ Games 2019
We attended yet another fantastic annual Victorian Teachers’ Games (VTG) as the major sponsor. The VTG was held in Geelong from 22-25 September 2019.
We enjoyed participating in games such as ten pin bowling, lawn bowls and dodgeball. We were given the opportunity to set up a stand at various locations, where we discussed the benefits of being with a bank that exists to support those who work in education and healthcare.
The VTG is all about celebrating the achievements of teachers, communicating with past and present colleagues, and educating others through social sport and events. It’s always a privilege to be the major sponsor of such a well-organised, fun event.

We attended the Victorian Association of State Secondary Principals’ (VASSP) annual conference, which was themed ‘Leading with wisdom in a complex world’. The two-day conference featured keynote speakers in education, which provided a great opportunity for learning and reflection. As a part of our support for VASSP and Victorian education, Snow Star Credit Union has worked with VASSP to provide two important awards that give an opportunity for two VASSP members to engage in professional learning that will enhance leadership capacity and contribute to improved student outcomes.
This year the awards were presented to:
- The Snow Star Credit Union Professional Learning Award: Shane Elevato, Principal Lorne P-12 College
- The Snow Star Credit Union Marion Heale Aspiring Leader Award: Brooke Taylor, Leading Teacher, Western Port Secondary College
Both of the recipients provided a fascinating insight into their very impressive work:
Shane is developing and embedding a values based, multi-disciplinary environmental conservation learning continuum across all levels of Lorne P-12 College with connection to the internationally renowned ‘green school’ movement.
Brooke is developing a collective understanding of student voice, agency and leadership, so the Western Port Secondary College leadership team can lead whole-school professional learning to create a culture of excellence to improve student outcomes.
Our Chair, Bernie Lloyd, was at the VASSP dinner to present the awards; which was very warmly received as Bernie is a life member of VASSP and now proudly Chair of our Board.

Sleep Awareness Week
Sleep Awareness Week begins on Monday 5 August 2019. The theme this year is ‘Sleep on it – memory and problem solving’.
Getting enough sleep is essential at any age, with research confirming that there are direct benefits to improved mental and physical health. From late night report writing to attempting to sleep during the day while on night shift, it can be difficult to get enough sleep. The week is a time to reflect on how you can make small changes in your own life to get enough sleep and enjoy the benefits of optimal learning and memory function.

Out and about in the community
As the major sponsor of the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT), we have attended several Provisionally Registered Teachers (PRT) seminars across the state over the past few weeks. These seminars are conducted to assist Graduate Teachers in their Teacher Registration process. Each attracting between 40 - 150 Graduate Teachers, the seminars allow us to communicate our Graduate Teacher offerings during our financial literacy presentations. The seminars are often in regional locations, such as Ballarat and Traralgon in June.
Another recent highlight was the Public Health Prevention Conference, which was held in June and attended by approximately 400 healthcare delegates from around the country. The Conference boasted national experts presenting various aspects of the rapidly moving and exciting era of public health prevention. It was a privilege for us to attend the event and present our offerings.
Other events that we enjoyed being a part of were:
- Melbourne Graduate Society Education Awards Evening.
- Ballarat South Catholic Primary Principals Event.
- Australian Catholic University - Transition to Profession Events.
- Resource Smart School Awards.
Supporting healthcare events
As a Bank that exists to support the community, we share similar values to those that work in healthcare. We supported and attended over 20 healthcare conferences and events in the past financial year, with five of the highlights listed below.
The Victorian Healthcare Association (VHA) annual conference
The VHA is the peak body for the Victorian public healthcare sector, so it was a privilege to be present at the event. Among us were nearly 200 leaders, including Board Directors and senior executives.
Pictured above is our stand in the Betty Cuthbert Lounge at the MCG.
The Australian College of Nurse Practitioners National Conference
This event brings together Nurse Practitioners, Advanced Practice Nurses and Nursing leaders from around Australia. It was an opportunity for us to learn, network and interact in a fun, friendly and engaging environment.
Leading Aged Services Australia - Tri State conference
The Tri-State Conference and Exhibition brought together over 300 age service professionals, leaders and specialists from across metropolitan and regional Victoria, South Australia and regional New South Wales. With over 50 speakers at the event, we were able to speak with staff from the residential care, community care, retirement living sectors and suppliers.
St Vincent’s Hospital - Celebrating 125 years of caring
It was a huge honour to be invited to the 125 year celebration of an organisation that has truly touched the lives of thousands of Australians over a long period of time. The event took place at St Patrick’s Cathedral.
National Disability Service (NDS) - Jobs Fairs
We’re proud to support NDS Jobs Fairs across the state. The Jobs Fairs help to connect disability service providers with job seekers and students. The events also facilitate information sessions on the benefits of working with people with a disability, and opportunities to network with current and future disability sector workers.
We’re looking forward to sharing more highlights throughout another strong year of supporting the vocations that help build a better community.

On Friday 31 May 2019, we supported the Mercy Health Foundation Ball. The Ball helped raise funds for Mercy Perinatal, which is a three-pillar centre of excellence in clinical care, education and research dedicated to improving the health of mothers and babies now and into the future.
We’re proud to have been a sponsor of the event and that our staff contributed to fundraising activities on the night, including a major raffle and silent auction. Our staff had a fantastic evening and, most importantly, the evening played a small role in helping to bring mothers and their babies home safely.
Pictured above are some of the Snow Star Credit Union representatives at the Mercy Health Foundation Ball.
Public Health Prevention Conference
Another highlight throughout June was the Public Health Prevention Conference which is convened by the Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA) at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Public Health Prevention Conference is focused on exploring sub-themes of economics of prevention and what is working, what needs to be strengthened and what are the biggest gaps in prevention systems.
The Conference has high quality national experts presenting on various aspects of this rapidly moving and exciting era of public health prevention. The conference has a focus on cross sector, multilevel interventions to build a healthier Australia through prevention.
Overall, the Conference was very informative and gave us a range of ideas for simple ways that we can improve our cardiovascular health.

We recently celebrated the official grand opening of our new branch in Moonee Ponds.
With our Board and Executive team present on the night; it was a great time to reflect on what we have already achieved since opening the branch in January. The number one achievement has been improving the experience for our customers.
The highlight of the night was our Chair of the Board, Bernie Lloyd, cutting the ribbon with founding Member and former long-standing Chair and Director, Alan Dash.
National Disability Service’s jobs fair
As an organisation that exists to support those who put others first, we were proud to be a supporter of the National Disability Service’s jobs fair that was held at Wodonga TAFE on 8 May 2019. Snow Star Credit Union Relationship Officer, Shane, attended the event which aimed at promoting employment opportunities to attract more people into the disability support industry.
Currently, there aren’t enough workers to fill the broad range of available roles, including in Human Resources, Allied Health and Information Technology. The future success of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) largely depends on having employees to fill these roles, with the disability workforce predicted to grow by 40% across the broader region by the end of the year.
More information on jobs within disability can be found on the Department of Social Services website.
Our Relationship Officers have also enjoyed the privilege of attending various Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) Mentor Sessions across the state recently.

International Nurses Day
Sunday 12 May is International Nurses Day, the birthday of Florence Nightingale. This day is important to us as we’re a bank that exists to support those who put others first, with a strong focus on supporting the education and healthcare sectors.
Each year, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) commemorates this day by distributing resources. In 2019, the ICN is looking at the nursing voice from the standpoint of ‘Health for All’. There are Guidance Packs available on the International Council of Nurses website which show how we can all convince others that nurses have a leading role in achieving Health for All. Within the Guidance Packs, you can read some interesting stories about the worldwide challenges associated with providing adequate healthcare for all.Events

International Women’s Day celebration
We celebrated International Women’s Day on Friday 8 March 2019 with a special panel discussion featuring four remarkable women. They were Leanne Boase, President of Australian College of Nurse Practitioners, Nicole McMahon, Foundation Development Manager of Love Me Love You, Dr Mary Cannon, Principal of Canterbury Girls’ Secondary College, and Lucy Christie, Co-Founder of Silverstone Edge.
For us, International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate women in every way. The panel discussion gave us all the opportunity to discuss the positive impact of women across all aspects of life, work, family and friendship.
All proceeds raised on the day were donated to White Ribbon Australia, a cause who operate in collaboration with many other organisations working to end men’s violence against women.

We previously wrote about the new ‘iPad for Specialist Schools’ program launched by State Schools’ Relief (SSR) late last year, of which we’re proudly the major sponsor. The program is designed to help provide non-verbal school students attending the 80 specialist schools within Victoria with their own voice at all times.
Shepparton’s Verney Road School received their donation in February and the iPads have already had a positive effect on students. Through the app ‘Words for Life’, students can communicate with their families, teachers, carers and friends.
Verney Road School teacher leader of communication, Merryn Saraiva explained that “Charlie, one of the recipients of the iPad was so excited when we told him… his face just lit up.” We’re proud to see the effect that the program is having already, and iPads will continue to be provided to students throughout 2019.
Our Relationship Offices have also continued attending orientation week events, Graduate Teacher Victorian Institute of Teaching Provisionally Registered Teachers sessions across the state.

Our Relationship Officers had a great time in February interacting with students at Universities and TAFEs across Victoria. In February alone, we were represented at over 10 different orientation week events. It gives us a chance to interact with our future generations and make them aware of the support services we can provide to help them manage their finances. It’s always humbling to find that many students are just as interested in Snow Star Credit Union’s origins, products and services as we are in their chosen field of study.

We’re looking forward to attending various O-Week events at TAFEs and Universities throughout Victoria in February and March. Our event stands are ready to go with games to play, loads of information about the Bank and how we support students, as well as some on the spot prizes up for grabs. We’ll share photos and stories from the upcoming events in our next edition of eSlate.
We’ll also continue to provide our workplace banking services this year, where we can assist with everyday banking needs, conduct general financial health checks and organise consultations.
Refer to the notices section for more information about O-Week dates and events, or if you would like to enquire about a workplace visit you can email support@snowstarcu.com or call LiveChat. -

We recently attended the National Disability Services CEO conference. The National Disability Services (NDS) is Australia's peak body for non-government disability service organisations, representing more than 1,100 non-government service providers. Collectively, NDS members operate several thousand services for Australians with all types of disability.
NDS is the only organisation that represents the full spectrum of disability service providers across Australia. Members range in size from small support groups to large multi-service organisations. NDS provides members with a strong voice, enabling the sector to collectively initiate change, influence outcomes and deliver the funding needed to ensure the best possible quality of life for people with disability.
Our Business Development Manager, Adrian Wilson, and Relationship Officer, Warden Mersey, discussed staff benefits packages for organisations ranging from 50-500 staff. We were delighted to see that there was lots of excitement and anticipation with a bank looking out for the needs of others.
