Modern Slavery
The International Labour Organisation reported in 2016 that at any given time an estimated 40.3 million people are in modern slavery globally, including 24.9 million in forced labour and 15.4 million in forced marriage. Modern slavery is a crime.
The Global slavery index estimates that in 2018 there were 15,000 living in Australia in modern slavery, a prevalence of 0.6 victims of modern slavery for every thousand people in the country.
Forced labour and related practices exist in the operations or supply chains of most businesses. Slavery occurs in every region of the world, including Australia due to the reliance on imported goods particularly those from south East Asia Australia is particularly exposed.
Snow Star Credit Union is committed to a long-term effort to reduce and hopefully eliminate, modern slavery from its supply chains and operations. To that end, it has engaged and been working closely with subject matter experts on modern slavery. Snow Star Credit Union views this as an important component of its broader corporate social responsibility and human rights obligations.
Snow Star Credit Union has put in place policies and processes in relation to workplace rights and to help identify, prevent and remediate modern slavery in its supply chain.
Our modern slavery risk assessment identified sector, industry, product, service and entity risks in our operational and investment portfolio supply chains and then followed the money flows relating to these categories into and out of Australia which, in turn, indicated the likelihood for modern slavery to occur in our supply chains within these categories, as opposed to actual occurrence within each individual supplier.
Our inaugural Modern Slavery Statement provides further details about the specific actions Snow Star Credit Union has taken to assess and address modern slavery risks.
Our Modern Slavery Statement was submitted to the Department of Home Affairs on 1 December 2020.
