Whether you have just graduated from University and you’re searching for your dream job, or you’ve decided this is the year to change jobs, we understand the challenges you may face in your job hunt. As a customer owned financial institution, our values are deeply ingrained principles that guide all of our actions. They support and underpin who we are, shape our culture (how we think, behave and feel), and differentiate us from other workplaces.
Setting yourself up for success
During the recruitment process, we are looking for more than the right skills and experience for a particular role: we looking for people who are aligned to our values.
We believe that by hiring people with the right attributes and values, we continue to build a culture of learning, support and doing the right thing by our customers. We also support this by providing opportunities to build capability internally, including mentorship, ongoing learning, coaching, development programs and financial study leave assistance.
Tips for creating a Resume and Cover Letter:
Be specific:
We get it - job hunting can be a challenging and time-consuming exercise. However, be careful not to sell yourself and your experience short by using a “scattergun” approach. Take your time to build your resume with the most relevant experience, and tailor your cover letter to suit the role.
Resume format:
You can find many resume examples online, and the challenge is for your resume to stand out from all the others. In our experience, we’ve found the most popular format is reverse-chronological, which lists experience starting with most recent, as it suits most levels of skills and experience.
First impressions matter:
Your cover letter creates the first impression, showcasing your personality and suitability for the role. Ideally, your cover letter should:
- Be no more than one page
- Explain why you are the ideal person for the job
- Highlight your skills that are most relevant for the position
Do your research:
We recommend you spend some time and get to know us via our social channels (Facebook and LinkedIn) and our website. This will give you an insight into who we are and the kind of activities we support. You might find that some of your own interests and experiences are directly aligned to our work - if they are, please include examples in your cover letter. This will help provide an insight into who you are and why you are the right fit for our culture as well as the role.
Embrace Social Media in your job search:
We also recommend using LinkedIn to support your job search. As a professional networking platform, it allows job seekers and employers to connect. Similar to an online version of your resume, LinkedIn also enables you to build out your profile with other experience, develop and share content, and learn, as well as searching for and applying for job opportunities.
Like many organisations, we use LinkedIn Recruiter to advertise roles and search for future talent. In some cases, we search for specific skills and experience and directly approach people via LinkedIn to determine their interest in a role, so it helps just to have your account set up so you can be found.
