Tips to unwind from technology
For many of us, technology is everywhere. From the moment we wake up in the morning, to when we’re at work, when we get home and before bed. Sure, technology enhances our lives in so many ways and helps us stay up-to-date, but do you ever feel that there’s too much of it? Some research even suggests that too much technology can be unhealthy. We’ve listed some simple tips that can help you find the right tech-balance.
Set limits
There are several smartphone apps that allow you to monitor and limit the amount of time spent using your device. You may not even need an app, as Apple and Google recently introduced features to help you gain insights about your smartphone use and set limits for what you want to manage. These features are called Screen Time and Digital Wellbeing, respectively. Both features also allow you to set up additional parental controls.
Get a hobby
A great way to unwind from technology is by enjoying non-tech hobbies in your free time. It’s so easy to get in the habit of playing games or shopping online during spare time, but this is also the perfect time to expand your horizons. Try getting outdoors, reading or catching up with family and friends.
Keep technology out of your bedroom
Did you know that research has shown a clear link between technology use right before bed and negative effects on sleep quality? Putting technology away even 30 minutes before bed can help. Checking your email or social media as soon as you wake up in the morning can also reduce mindfulness.
What do you need less of?
It may be nothing at all, or it could be simple habits like checking and responding to work emails at night, a Netflix addiction, aimlessly scrolling through social media or too many video games. It may not be you that could benefit from less technology; but your child, partner or friend instead. Once that part is identified, some simple tips might be all that’s needed, such as removing certain apps from your phone, turning off your laptop at 6pm every day, or watching a maximum of one episode of your favourite TV show each day.
You might be surprised at the overall list of potential benefits from using less technology. Some of those potential benefits that we haven’t listed above include increased happiness, less anxiety, more family time and deeper social connections.
