How to prevent kitchen fires at home
Anything from dirty appliances, incense, candles, home heating and smoking are major culprits of home fires; but as a nation of time-poor foodies, it pays to be smarter in the kitchen.
Think before you cook
Don't leave cooking unattended or flammables (think tea towels) near the stove. Heat oil carefully, place pot pan handles inwards and don't use water to put out fat and oil fires. And metal and microwaves don’t mix (that means no aluminium foil).
Be barbeque savvy
We all love a barbeque but please comply with fire restrictions. Ensure it’s set up in a safe space and keep a splatter mat if on a wooden deck. Have a fire extinguisher nearby and remember that LPG is flammable so consider a safety device that shuts off the gas if a leak occurs.
No excuses tips
Nothing beats common sense, but these tips will help prevent, prepare and plan for fire safety:
- Replace smoke detector batteries and test them monthly.
- Don’t overload switches and use power boards with built in safety switches.
- Switch off and disconnect non-essential electrical appliances.
- Ensure lights left on are safely located away from combustibles like curtains and use globes with correct wattage.
