Education Resources for Learning at Home

These are extraordinary times we are living in, and it feels like just about everything is changing at a rapid pace. One major aspect of life has been a big conversation: what does this mean for schools and education?

Each state has a different approach, and here in Victoria schools are reopening – but not as we’ve known them before. The vast majority of students will be learning remotely and their classrooms transformed to online learning hubs from home. Many parents who find themselves working from home, are tasked with additional duties to support their children in this new way of learning.

These are big life changes, but we are here to help! We’ve been working with education partners since our inception and have collated below a bunch of helpful resources to support this transition.

Whether you’re a teacher looking for new ideas for online learning, or a parent seeking support for keeping kids motivated and focused, there is something for everyone.

Remote learning classroom tools & tips

SBS Australia recently shared some tips directly from teachers who have been running remote learning for a long time.

Digital Learning and Teaching Victoria are running a series of free webinars to support best practice in online learning, including introductions to various online platforms, cybersecurity and online research methodology. The first one kicks off 22 April and you can register online.

Lesson plans and interactive activities

ABC Education’s website is a hub for all things online learning, with engaging resources for primary and secondary students alike. Note for parents: There is a wealth of information here to support you – from fun games and interactive activities for your kids, to helpful articles on parenting through these challenging times.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia has a bunch of free, online, curriculum-based resources complete with cross-curricular links, standards of achievement, lesson plans and assessment tools.

Dr Paul Swan provides resources to support teaching mathematics at home and has focused on commonly accessed resources to allow for lessons to be accessible from home. The website is also updated regularly with new video content.

While on the topic of maths, everyone’s favourite online maths teacher Eddie Woo has his classes available on his YouTube channel, WooTube and has recently added some great resources to help teachers with tips on equipment for online learning.

The National Library of Australia is closed to visitors for now, but they have made available a wealth of teaching resources (aligned to Australian curriculum) online via their Digital Classroom, including the Treasures Gallery collection showcasing significant items of Australian history, with engaging activities for students and teachers alike.

Mental & Physical Wellbeing

The Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation have made available a range of online tools and resources to help students (and their parents!) stay active during this time to improve their social, physical and mental health.

Our friends at Love Me Love You have some excellent toolkits available on their website to support the mental health of students, teachers and parents who are transitioning to working and learning from home.
